A woman has sparked discussion online after sharing how she felt more like a “budget replacement” than a friend at someone’s wedding.
In a viral post, she recounted being invited as one of only two close friends to attend the bride’s supposedly “simple” wedding.
However, what began as a small celebration quickly turned into a day where she found herself taking on multiple responsibilities without prior agreement.
Took on multiple roles despite having no experience
According to her, the bride had asked one friend to handle photography, while she was tasked with doing makeup.
Both requests came despite neither of them being professionals.
She admitted that she initially declined out of concern that she might “mess things up”, but eventually agreed after the bride repeatedly reassured her and said she trusted her.
On the wedding day, she arrived early to help prepare the bride, even learning how to style bridal hair through TikTok tutorials on the spot.
‘I didn’t feel like a bridesmaid’
She said she had dressed casually, assuming she would leave after helping out. However, more responsibilities were added throughout the day.
She was later asked to assist with preparing the groom and even join the wedding convoy. At that point, she began to feel that her role had shifted entirely.
“I realised I didn’t feel like a bridesmaid,” she wrote. “More like part of the wedding budget that got cut.”
The OP also noted that there were no bridesmaid outfits and no prior discussions about their roles, with most decisions made on the spot.
Asked to help manage reception and collect angpaus
Her involvement extended into the wedding dinner as well, where she claimed she was asked to help oversee the event flow and stand at the reception table to collect angpao from guests.
During the traditional door-opening segment, she received RM10 each from the bride and groom.
She clarified that the amount was not the issue, as she had given a significantly larger angpao to the couple due to their long-standing friendship.
What upset me the most was the lack of appreciation. The bride thanked many individuals during her speech, but did not mention me or the other friend even once.
“There was also no follow-up message after the wedding to acknowledge our efforts. That was what made me feel disheartened,” she wrote.
Reflecting on the experience, the OP said she does not believe the bride lacked financial means. Instead, she felt it was a matter of priorities.
According to her, the bride had no hesitation spending on luxury items, but appeared unwilling to spend on proper wedding services or fairly involve her friends.
Distanced herself
The OP added that she chose not to confront the bride over the incident but has instead distanced herself.
“Some things, once you see them clearly, you can’t go back to how it was before,” she wrote.
Her post has since resonated with many online, with some netizens debating the boundaries between helping friends and being taken for granted.
