While most people were busy wishing each other Happy New Year, a group of Malaysians had something else to celebrate first.
Their birthday.
Over the past few days, a Threads post went viral after a Malaysian jokingly pointed out that for those born on 1 January, New Year’s Day technically plays second fiddle to their birthday.
“Happy New Year? Nah, happy birthday to me.” the user wrote, alongside a close-up photo of his MyKad showing the date 010101.

The post quickly struck a chord with other Malaysians born on the same date, who soon flooded the replies with photos of their own ICs as proof.
“Ada geng”
Before long, the comment section turned into an unofficial support group for January 1 babies.
Some proudly shared their MyKad numbers beginning with 010101, 020202, or similar date patterns, while others jokingly called out their “batch numbers” like a reunion roll call.

“Ada geng,” one commenter wrote, clearly pleased to discover they were not alone.

Another joked that New Year celebrations could wait, because birthday wishes came first.
Several users joked that New Year fireworks feel a bit more meaningful when you can pretend they are meant for you.
Others laughed about how they never had to remind friends about their birthday, since the entire country already has a public holiday to mark the date.
Some even said it felt like winning a small life lottery, because you get cake, countdowns, and long weekends all wrapped into one.
