M’sian Police Officer Caught Smoking At Restaurant Despite New Smoking Ban Enforcement

This follows the enforcement of new smoking regulations from October 1.
As Malaysia tightens its regulations on smoking with the introduction of the Public Health Smoking Product Control Act 2024 (Act 852), authorities and citizens alike are under heightened scrutiny to comply with these rules.

With the number of designated non-smoking areas increased and strict measures implemented to curb smoking in public spaces, the country aims to create a healthier environment for all.

However, when the enforcers themselves are caught breaking these laws, it raises questions about accountability.

Police chief Shahrulnizam Ja’afar confirmed that a disciplinary investigation paper has been opened to determine if the officer’s actions violated any laws or standard operating procedures, reported FMT.

Emphasising the department’s commitment to upholding the law, Shahrulnizam assured the public that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken if any wrongdoing is found.

This incident follows the government’s enforcement of the new smoking regulations as of October 1.

The law not only prohibits smoking and electronic cigarettes in the newly designated zones but also restricts the sale of smoking products in specific locations such as schools, marketplaces, online platforms, and vending machines.

Additionally, the act bans advertisements, promotions, and sponsorships targeting minors, reinforcing the government’s stance on public health and safety.
