Mat rempits, also known as illegal racers, often appear in the news for all the wrong reasons due to their penchant for dangerous fun in the form of precarious stunts, which often lead to fatalities and injuries.
In a bid to nip the problem in its bud, police in KL resorted to a unique method by bringing a group of mat rempits who were arrested for illegal racing to perform prayers and attend a motivational talk at a mosque.

In a Facebook post shared by the KL Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Department (JSPT), it wrote that a total of 13 mat rempits aged between 14 and 19 were arrested during ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ last Sunday (Sept 8).

After bringing the group to the Tun HS Lee police station for documentation purposes, the police transported the mat rempits to a place they probably least expected — the An Nazahah Surau to perform Subuh prayers (dawn prayers) together.
After performing the prayer, the mat rempits were made to sit through a motivational talk, presumably to help them see the error of their ways and hopefully turn over a new leaf.

According to JSPT chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd. Zamzuri Mohd. Is, he said the religious approach was to “help their hearts and minds in shaping a more noble character”.
He also called upon parents to always keep an eye on their children, especially teenagers who are often on the road, so that they will not be involved in activities that break traffic laws.
