The Global Passport Ranking 2025, published by Henley & Partners on Wednesday (Jan 8), has ranked the Malaysian passport as the 12th most powerful globally, granting visa-free access to 183 destinations.

In Southeast Asia, Malaysia is second only to Singapore, which retained its top global position for the second consecutive year.

The Henley Passport Index, headquartered in London, uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to assess passport strength across 227 destinations worldwide.

With its latest rankings, the index continues to serve as a critical resource for global mobility insights and policy guidance.

Southeast Asia Rankings:

  • Singapore retains the top global and regional position, offering visa-free travel to 195 destinations.
  • Malaysia follows as the second-strongest in Southeast Asia and 12th globally with access to 183 destinations.
  • Brunei ranks 20th globally, allowing visa-free travel to 166 destinations.
  • Timor-Leste secures the 51th position globally, with access to 97 destinations.
  • Thailand ranks 61st globally, providing visa-free access to 82 destinations.

Top Global Rankings for 2025:

  • Singapore holds the number one spot, offering its passport holders visa-free access to 195 destinations globally.
  • Japan ranks second, with 193 destinations accessible visa-free.
  • France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, and South Korea share third place, with 192 destinations available visa-free to their citizens.
  • Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway occupy the fourth position.
  • Belgium, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are ranked fifth globally.
