Years of saving by a pair of hardworking Malaysian parents were wiped out in an instant — not by fraud or theft, but by their own child.
According to a report by mStar, a mother was shocked to discover that over RM10,000 stored in her child’s Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) trust account had been completely withdrawn without their knowledge.
RM10,000 vanished from account
In a now-viral social media post, the mother shared that the money had been painstakingly saved over many years — including festive “angpao” money, small deposits made during her child’s early years, and long-term savings set aside by both parents for education or emergencies.
I checked the bank statement only to realise that over RM10,000 had vanished. What broke our hearts the most was finding out the ‘thief’ was our own son,” she wrote.
“Can you imagine how we felt? It was like being betrayed by your own child. We were devastated.”
Despite the parents regularly buying their child what he needed each year, the son had quietly used the savings to buy a phone, sneakers, and clothes.
We had asked him before where the money came from, and he claimed he was earning extra while staying in his dorm. We didn’t think much of it then.”
While acknowledging that the ASB account was indeed under the child’s name, the mother said withdrawing the money without informing them was no different from stealing.

Her story sparked widespread discussion online. Many netizens sympathised with the parents and criticised the son’s actions, calling it irresponsible and ungrateful.
Some even suggested that the boy should be made to face the harsh realities of adult life, including having to work for his own expenses, to better understand the value of money and long-term financial planning.
