With school now officially back in session for 2026, parents are rushing to the nearest supermarkets and bookstores to purchase school uniforms and textbooks for their children.
As such, some parents are feeling the financial strain brought by these purchases and this prompted one parent to request the Ministry of Education (MOE) to look into providing textbooks for free.
‘Give us free textbooks!’
The request was made on Threads, where the parent wrote the following:
“Why are school textbooks so expensive? What about parents who are struggling financially and have many children? How can they move forward if they can’t even provide basic learning necessities for their children?
Please, MOE—don’t burden parents with the amount they have to pay for their children’s books. It should be free. These are essential items that children must have. Parents are already burdened with buying clothes for their children.”
The parent also argued that children shouldn’t be viewed as a burden as education is a vital phase of their lives, adding that all parents simply want to give their kids the best.
Online backlash
However, netizens were deeply put off by the parent’s request and promptly made their distaste known in the comment section.
‘Maybe the only thing that needs to be free of charge is a condom.’
‘This parent knows he/she isn’t financially stable but knows how to have lots of kids….only to blame it on MOE.’
‘Sometimes these kind of people make me think we might need to go back to the old days where society and government don’t give a f*** if you and your child don’t survive.’
