Recently, a viral video has left many in disbelief, revealing an incredibly expensive piece of wood from Malaysia priced at a whopping RM310,000.
Oud, also known as agarwood, is a highly prized and aromatic wood that comes from the Aquilaria tree, which is native to Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.
The wood becomes valuable when it is infected by a particular type of mould, causing it to produce a dark, fragrant resin. This resin is what makes oud one of the most expensive materials in the world.
In the clip shared by the TikTok account @scentisphere, known for its content on fragrances, a man explained that the item in question was Malaysian oud.
When asked about its price, he confirmed the astonishing sum of RM310,000 for a single piece of this rare wood.
A follow-up question was posed: “How much liquid can be extracted from this piece of wood?”
The answer came with the revelation that only 300 grams of liquid could be obtained after boiling the oud for days.
Why is oud so expensive?
The high price of oud stems from its rarity and the labour-intensive process required to extract the precious resin. Oud trees are rare, and the infection that produces the resin can take years to develop.
The resin itself is highly valued in the perfume industry for its deep, rich fragrance, making it a sought-after ingredient for luxury perfumes.
The video’s caption emphasised the rarity of the Malaysian oud, describing it as one of the most expensive and sought-after fragrance ingredients in the world.
