A Malaysian man recently went viral after sharing his unconventional—but effective—way of saving money.
In a Facebook post on the page “Tuina KL 推拿高手” he revealed that he’s been stashing away every RM20 note he receives into a mooncake box, and after a few years, it’s completely full.
More than just about saving money
For him, it’s more than just about saving money.
This isn’t just about money,” he wrote. “It’s about the ritual of life.”
“Every time I receive RM20 notes—no matter how many—I immediately save them. It’s a way to reward myself later.”
The post, featuring an image of the tin bursting with green RM20 bills, quickly caught the attention of netizens, many of whom shared their own creative saving habits.

In the comments, he also revealed that his dedication has helped him save around RM10,000 after a few years. However, it hasn’t been easy — he admitted that he often has to resist temptation when his friends are out enjoying good food.
Netizens’ reaction
While it might seem like a simple habit, many agreed it was a practical way to build up savings while adding a little joy and meaning to daily life.
“Wow wow wow, there are so many amazing savers out there — definitely something worth learning!”

One netizen commented that before the pandemic, saving was easier because most people used cash.
I used to save like this too and managed to keep thousands every year. But now with e-wallets, I barely get to hold on to cash,” they shared.

Other netizens also managed to poke fun at the situation.
“I just want to know where you’re hiding that box!”

“No wonder I couldn’t find any RM20 notes at the market — turns out it was you all along. 😆”
