Medical certificates (MC) are usually issued by doctors to individuals they believe are deserving of one due to illness.
A doctor recently vented his frustration over a woman who became upset after he told her that he wouldn’t be giving her an MC so that she could take care of her sick child.
‘Why do you need the MC if you’re not sick?’
In a Threads post, the doctor said the woman came to his office and told him that her child was suffering a fever and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).

She then asked whether he could issue her an MC and not for her sick child. In response, the doctor said he wasn’t able to do that as MCs were only for unwell individuals.
“When I asked her why she didn’t apply for leave, the woman told me that her company’s HR department had already closed for the year and were no longer processing leave applications.
She then became upset and called me “cruel” for not giving her an MC. She also threatened to report me via the Public Complaints Management System (Sispaa),” he wrote.

The woman’s angry reaction left the doctor bewildered, who wondered why she was the one asking for an MC and not her child.
“I don’t know lah, people these days are too entitled. I’m tired of dealing with people who make such demands.
“Someone else is sick, yet you’re the one desperately asking for MC on their behalf. If you’re lazy to go to work, just tell your boss. It’s that simple!” he ranted.
Divided opinions
Netizens were split in their take on the issue, with some voicing support and others disagreeing with the doctor’s actions.
On one hand, some praised the doctor for standing firm on his principles and chided the woman for trying to “manipulate” others so that she could get what she wanted.

On the other hand, some said that while the doctor had technically done the right thing, they felt he could have shown some empathy towards the woman and be more accommodating with her request.
