A woman was criticised online after allegedly attempting to take a supermarket shopping basket from a store in Setia Alam, with photos of the incident sparking heated discussion on social media.
According to Sin Chew Daily, images shared by a netizen on Threads showed the customer placing a supermarket shopping basket into her car boot without removing the purchased items inside.
Woman instructed her child to load the basket
The original poster claimed the woman was also heard telling her child to place the basket directly into the car, as if there was nothing wrong with the act.
She even told her child to put the basket into the car. I reminded her, but she completely ignored me,” the netizen wrote.
The poster added that the family remained parked for a considerable amount of time but never attempted to transfer the items from the basket into the car, raising suspicion that they intended to take the basket along with the groceries.
There was no sign they wanted to unload the items at all. I shouted to remind them, but they pretended not to hear. At that time, supermarket staff were busy dealing with a large number of customers,” the post said.
Netizens condemn the act as unethical
The post quickly drew widespread attention, with many netizens expressing anger over what they described as irresponsible and unethical behaviour.
Several pointed out that missing baskets create extra problems for supermarket staff.
One netizen claimed that if a shopping basket goes missing, the store manager may have to personally bear the cost, adding that a single basket can be worth around RM250.
I once had to search an entire housing area for a missing trolley before finding it at a customer’s house. RM250 is not a small amount,” the netizen shared.
Others were harsher in their criticism. One commenter suggested someone should have shouted “basket thief” to shame the individual, while another condemned the act as a poor example for children.
