In a world that can sometimes feel cold and indifferent, one small act of kindness can change the course of everything.
This is the story of Lim Zi Yang, a young student from Johor, whose life took an unexpected turn when he was met with compassion, right when he felt lost in more ways than one.
The backstory
Lim, who had never ventured far from his hometown of Batu Pahat, was taking a bold leap of faith—travelling to Penang to pursue his studies at Politeknik Balik Pulau.
Nervous and alone, he boarded an express bus for the first time, with his luggage and hopes in tow.
But life had other plans, and a simple mix-up made his journey far more complicated than he expected. He mistakenly grabbed the wrong bag, only realizing his slip-up when he arrived at his hostel.
Panic set in. Here was a young man, far from home, no familiar faces in sight, and to top it all off, his belongings had been lost in transit—literally.
But, like an angel in disguise, Lim’s lecturer, Mohd Zaidil Adha Mat Hussin, stepped up to the plate. Not only did he help Lim retrieve his missing bag, but he noticed something else was off. Lim was not just lost and anxious—he was also hungry.
Seeing the situation, Mohd Zaidil didn’t just zip up the problem with the bag. He invited Lim for a meal, took him shopping for essentials, and ensured the young man was back on track.
M’sian minister adopts Lim as his son
It was an act of kindness that packed an emotional punch and went viral, catching the attention of none other than Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
Sim, clearly moved by the lecturer’s actions, decided to meet both Lim and Mohd Zaidil at a local restaurant.
During their encounter, Sim presented Mohd Zaidil with RM 1,000 and a certificate of appreciation, showing just how much he valued the lecturer’s noble efforts. It was a small token of gratitude, but one that hit all the right notes.
And as they say, when it rains, it pours—this time in a good way.
Sim didn’t stop there. Deeply touched by Lim’s struggle and journey, he decided to take things a step further.
He adopted Lim as his foster child, gifted him RM 3,000, and committed to giving him a monthly allowance of RM 200 until he completes his studies.
Lim’s path, which once seemed riddled with potholes, was now on a smooth ride toward a brighter future.
Lim’s journey to Penang had been anything but a smooth-sailing trip. Travelling alone without the financial means for his father to accompany him, this young man was on his own.
But thanks to the kindness of his lecturer, Lim’s life took a detour for the better.
What started as a small slip-up with a bag ended up opening doors that Lim never thought possible. The experience has shown how a simple, heartfelt gesture can snowball into something much bigger, giving a whole new meaning to “baggage claim.”
Sim’s support not only provided financial help but also a renewed sense of hope for Lim, proving that sometimes, when life unpacks the unexpected, a little kindness can make all the difference.
