His hard work wasn’t just about making ends meet; it was to ensure his son received the education he never had.

“He never took a day off as he wanted to see his son attend school and eventually head off to university.

“Despite the fact that Uncle An works as a hawker and has little education, he is very proud of his son and never once thought of giving up his job as a hawker,” he wrote.

Uncle Kentang added that Uncle An’s son, who is about to complete his Master’s degree, expressed interest in pursuing a PhD in both mathematics and English.

Awarded with graduation cap & robe

To honour the huge sacrifice he had made for his son, Uncle An was given a graduation robe and mortarboard to put on along with a “Public PhD” and “Diligence Award” from Uncle Kentang.

The latter also praised people like Uncle An who worked hard for the sake of their children’s future and wellbeing.

How many hawkers work tirelessly to raise their children to become successful? Every drop of sweat they shed is valuable, and it’s all for the bright future of their children.

“Every hawker has their own story, and we should never look down on them. We have no idea how many engineers, doctors, architects, businessmen, accountants, or scientists have been raised through their hard work at their stalls,” wrote Uncle Kentang.
