It seems that even a five-figure salary might not be enough to secure a home in today’s economy.
A Malaysian man recently shared his financial struggles online, revealing that despite earning RM10,000 a month, he still finds it challenging to afford a house for his ageing parents.

His post, which was initially shared on Reddit but has since been deleted and reposted on Threads, sparked a discussion about the cost of living, financial priorities, and the reality of homeownership in Malaysia.
RM10,000 salary, but is it enough
The 32-year-old Malaysian man revealed that despite earning around RM10,100 per month, his expenses already take up a significant portion of his income. His breakdown includes:
- Car loans (for himself and his family): RM2,000
- Student loan repayment: RM200
- Rent & utilities: RM1,800
- Food & entertainment: RM1,500 (mostly Grab)
- Phone plan, home internet & insurance: RM670

This brings his total monthly expenditure to approximately RM6,170, leaving him with just under RM4,000 in disposable income.
However, with plans to purchase a house worth RM650,000–RM700,000 for his parents, he anticipates an additional RM2,800 in mortgage repayments.
Balancing financial responsibilities & future plans
Although he has been able to save and enjoy his income over the past one to two years, he now feels the pressure of homeownership.
While some might suggest he move in with his parents to cut costs, he firmly stated that living with them again is not an option—though their relationship remains good.
Aside from covering his own expenses, he also provides financial support to his parents and siblings, including paying for their cars and phone plans.
With a potential future expense of RM8,900 per month, he would be left with only RM1,200 in savings.
Given these constraints, he is now considering taking up a side hustle to generate additional income and ease the burden of homeownership.
