In today’s world, family expectations often collide with personal aspirations, especially when it comes to financial decisions.
Recently, a Malaysian man shared his frustration on social media regarding his mother’s pressure about his choice of car.
The man, who has been working for three years, expressed his sadness over his mother’s comments that he had achieved nothing.
To her, “achievements” meant tangible assets like a car or a house. He mentioned that he wanted to buy a Myvi, but his mother was dismissive, asking, “Why buy a cheap car?”

On top of that, she refused to accompany him to pick the car or even drive it. This left him wondering, “Why is my mum like this?”
Family expectations & financial pressure
This post, shared anonymously on X through @meinmokhtar, sparked a lot of discussions online.
Many netizens empathised with the man, sharing similar experiences of facing unrealistic expectations from family members.
One person shared that their cousin faced similar pressure from their family to buy a Honda, despite struggling to make ends meet.
“Once my cousin bought the Honda, the money was barely enough to get by each month. When they couldn’t pay, their mum didn’t help,” they explained.
It’s clear that for some, the pressure to conform to family expectations often results in financial hardship.

Changing mindsets & financial literacy
Other netizens pointed out that changing the mindset of older generations can be difficult, especially when it comes to financial matters.
One user remarked, “It’s hard to change a mindset that loves to compare. They don’t understand that life is tough. Hopefully, this person will be blessed with more fortune.”

Additionally, there were comments encouraging the man to educate his mother on financial literacy.
“Your mum’s financial literacy is low, but that doesn’t mean you should follow suit. The next generation should be more advanced and knowledgeable. Learn and improve your financial literacy, then teach your parents what you’ve learned,” said one commenter.
They emphasised the importance of passing on knowledge, just like how younger generations teach older ones how to use technology and the internet.
