A man from Malaysia who formerly worked as a teacher in Singapore had his crimes brought to light after a member of the public reported him to the police for allegedly filming men showering.
Upon his arrest, police uncovered more illicit videos taken by the suspect between 2010 and 2022, thus laying bare the extend of his lewd and perverted nature.
Was caught filming group of men showering
On the morning of Jun 1, 2022, the accused, Woo Weng Chuan, was at the MacRitchie Reservoir amphitheatre, where he was with some students as the teacher in charge for the track and field co-curricular activity.
As the students went on with their training, Woo saw several men showering at the open shower area. He then took out his phone and began filming while walking around the area a few times.
Woo was then spotted by a jogger, who came out from the shower and saw him filming the naked men. He immediately contacted police and Woo was subsequently arrested.
Charge sheets showed that Woo had done the same on nine separate occasions between Jan. 3, 2022, and Jun. 1, 2022 at MacRitchie Reservoir.
53 videos of guys inside changing rooms found
Following Woo’s arrest, police raided his home and uncovered a stash of videos featuring men being filmed without their consent.
They found 10 videos, taken between Apr 14, 2022 and May 30, 2022, showing male individuals partially or fully naked in the changing room and shower area of a sauna.
30 videos of unidentified males partially or fully naked in the locker room of the California Fitness Gym in Novena, filmed between Dec 23, 2010 and Jun 17, 2011, were also retrieved from a hard disk.
Police also found 13 videos of men being filmed at the same gym on Feb. 22, 2014 from Woo’s Google Drive, bringing the total number of videos to 53.
Took the videos for ‘his own pleasure’
While in court yesterday (Aug 26), Woo admitted that whenever he crossed paths with attractive males, he would have the urge to film them in changing rooms or shower areas.
He also confessed to watching the clips “for his own pleasure” but claimed he didn’t share them with anyone else. He added that he uploaded them to his Google Drive due to insufficient storage on his phone.
Woo pleaded guilty to three counts, which included voyeurism and making obscene films under the Films Act, while another three charges were taken into consideration.
The prosecution asked for for 27 to 31 weeks’ jail, arguing that the case had a “”significant” nature of obscenity as the genitals of the victims could be seen in several clips.
Woo’s lawyers pleaded for 22 to 25 weeks’ jail, citing his cooperation with the police and confession. They also said that Woo, who had been taking photos of men since 2005, struggled to find anyone to confide in regarding his sexuality.
They also said Woo is currently undergoing treatment and doing his best to not reoffend.
The court sentenced Woo to five months and five weeks in jail, where his sentence will begin on Sept 23.
