A 32-year-old executive from Sarawak survived a terrifying accident near Sematan on Oct 22 and later discovered something he never expected.
His iPhone 15 Pro Max, which had been submerged underwater for nearly five hours, powered on instantly without a single issue or scratch.
Lost control of the vehicle and plunged into drain
Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, Nazrul Hafiq bin Hashim said he was driving near Sematan when he suddenly lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road.
His car plunged into a large roadside drain and completely submerged into it.
Nazrul said he regained consciousness in total darkness, unsure of what had happened. Water surrounded him on all sides.
I was completely disoriented. Everything was dark and I realized I was fully underwater. My first thought was to stay calm and not panic. I told myself that I had to survive,” he shared.
He focused on escaping and managed to break the driver side window before climbing out with only minor injuries.
Help arrived within minutes
After getting out of the drain, Nazrul waited by the roadside for assistance. He said it felt like a very long time, but help arrived within minutes.
“Some people nearby saw what happened and immediately called the ambulance and police. I borrowed a phone to call my parents while waiting.”
He was later taken to the nearest clinic for treatment.
iPhone remained underwater for almost 5 hours
While escaping the sinking car, Nazrul’s phone had slipped from his grip and sank with the vehicle. He assumed it was gone for good.
When emergency responders towed the vehicle out of the drain, his friends helped gather his belongings. They eventually located the phone under the driver seat floor mat.
To everyone’s surprise, it turned on immediately.
“After everything that happened, I thought the phone would be completely destroyed. But when my friends found it and it turned on after being underwater for about five hours, we were all amazed. They were so excited that they even took a selfie holding it.”

Nazrul said the device looked completely normal and showed zero signs of water damage.
The phone worked perfectly. No sound issues, no camera fogging, not even a single scratch. I charged it right away and it functioned like normal. It really showed how reliable and well built the device is.”
Although the accident left him shaken, he said he feels grateful to have survived and thankful for the quick response from those who stopped to help.
As for his unexpectedly tough smartphone, he admitted it was the last thing he thought would make it out of the accident with absolutely no damage.
