A Malaysian man shared his story of being arrested and landed in jail for 1 day at the age of 16 because he did not have his identification card with him.
In a TikTok video posted by user @thejokercho, he detailed the events that unfolded when he was detained at a shopping centre in Klang, Selangor.
Temporary identity paper
The incident occurred after he lost his original identity card and was issued a temporary one on paper, which he left at home to avoid damage.
On the day of the incident, police were conducting a routine inspection and detaining a group of foreigners at the same location.
Unbeknownst to him, he would soon be involved. When asked to present his identification, he realized he had left his temporary paper ID at home.
Lacking any valid proof of his Malaysian citizenship, he was taken into custody along with the foreigners and transported to the police station.
Handcuffed and arrested
In the video, he recounts the police demanding his ID and his subsequent arrest.
“Yes, the police asked for my ID which I didn’t have on me, resulting in me being handcuffed while my friend, who had his ID, was released; I told him to inform my dad,” he explained.
He was held in lockup for four days before appearing in court, where he was sentenced to one day in jail.
“I will not do this again and will carry my IC wherever I go.” He told the judge.
‘One day jail’
After hearing my plead, the judge sentenced me to ‘one day jail’.
“The person next to me told me not to worry, as ‘one day jail’ just means staying in the court until 4 PM, then I can go home,” He said.
After completing his brief sentence, he returned home where his family bathed him in lemon water and discarded the clothes he wore during his detention, adhering to an old family tradition following an arrest.
The video of him retelling the story has since garnered over 726,100 views, he urged viewers to always carry their identification to avoid similar predicaments.
