A 48-year-old Malaysian man was sentenced to more than a decade in jail and multiple cane strokes after he pleaded guilty to raping a woman while posed as a Singaporean police officer.
Sharveen Chetty pleaded guilty to one count of rape, while a second rape charge and a charge of impersonating a police officer was taken into consideration during sentencing.
Pretended to be policeman
According to CNA, Chetty became “sexually attracted” to the woman, who was working as a domestic helper in Singapore, after spotting her sitting outside the Little India MRT station exit with her friends on July 11, 2022.

To avoid being detected by CCTV cameras, Chetty put on a cap and a black jacket before taking a longer route back to the group.
Threatened woman before rape
When he approached the woman and her friends, he told them he was a policeman and asked for their identification documents.
Chetty then told the woman to follow him to some bushes in a secluded area and kissed her.

Shocked by his behaviour, the woman pushed him away and asked why he did it. Chetty then threatened to have the woman and her friends “blacklisted” from working in Singapore.
Afraid that he would follow through with his threat, the woman gave in and Chetty proceeded to rape and sexually assault her.
After the ordeal, the woman reunited with her friends and lodged a police report.
Jailed 12 years
Chetty left Singapore but later returned on July 14, 2022, where he was arrested at the Tuas Checkpoint.

The prosecution requested the court to impose a jail term of between 11 and 13 years, plus 12 cane strokes.
Chetty was eventually sentenced to 12 years in jail and 12 cane strokes.
