As a Malaysian, we love, we claim, and obsess over nasi lemak! Guess what? It’s definitely a valid reaction!
Meet this young man who is now letting the locals in New Zealand get a taste of it too.
M’sian man sells nasi lemak in New Zealand
A video posted by @weihonngg on Instagram has recently gone viral after he showed how he sets up his nasi lemak business in New Zealand, where the clip has garnered over 698,000 views with over 20,000 likes.

In the video, the man named Wei Hong is seen preparing his nasi lemak with boneless chicken from scratch before selling it at the Motueka Sunday Market every Sunday as he has a full time job.
Wei Hong added that one of his customers praised his nasi lemak by saying that it was the best chicken she has had in her life. He also mentioned that starting a business far from home is not easy and what keeps him going is the support he receives from the locals.

Bringing a piece of M’sia to NZ
In a brief interview with Wei Hong, he explained that he moved to New Zealand in 2020 and has been living there since.
When asked why he started his business over there, he said:
I noticed that while there are many Asian cuisines in New Zealand, Malaysian food isn’t as common. My partner and I missed it a lot, so we wanted to share this part of our culture with the community.”

Wei Hong said he sells his nasi lemak set with boneless fried chicken for NZD15.50 (approx. RM39.60) and added he is truly grateful for the support from a diverse range of customers and not just Malaysians.

“I am grateful that people from various cultural backgrounds support my business. I am happy to bring people together with my nasi lemak.”
Netizens praise his business
Needless to say, Malaysians were proud to see their fellow countryperson sharing local tradition with New Zealanders and commended him for it.
‘You make Malaysia proud!‘

‘Amazing. Let’s keep our tradition alive.‘

‘Amazing stuff! Thank you for bringing our food across seas.’
