Dowry expectations are back in the spotlight after a Malaysian man claimed his friend’s relationship ended following a RM40,000 request.
The man recounted how his friend had been preparing to take the next step towards marriage, only to be caught off guard by the amount requested by his girlfriend.
Friend allegedly shocked by RM40,000 request
According to the post, the man said his friend had recently planned to propose and believed that marriage was within reach.
However, the situation changed when the woman reportedly asked for a RM40,000 dowry.
Reported by mStar, the man wrote that his friend was left stunned by the request, especially after comparing it with the dowries of others in their circle.
He claimed that most of their friends had dowries ranging between RM7,000 and RM10,000, making the RM40,000 request feel overwhelming for his friend.
Relationship ended after dowry discussion
He said the couple’s relationship ended shortly after the dowry was brought up.
He added that it was painful to see his friend’s hopes of getting married fall apart simply because he could not afford the amount requested.
The man also mentioned that the woman was attractive and wore a hijab, and that she held a diploma in hospitality.
However, he claimed that the RM40,000 request left his friend emotionally affected and discouraged, ultimately leading to the end of the relationship.
