M’sian man punches bus driver for making him wait 11 minutes

Shin Min Daily News reported that the incident occurred at about 8am on Jan 21, where the suspect, Looi Kai Ye, was waiting for a bus near Block 141 Tampines Avenue 2.

After 11 minutes of waiting, he lost his patience and became angry. When the bus finally arrived, Looi began yelling and assaulted the bus driver.

He punched her at least six times on the left side of her head and was eventually held back and taken out from the bus by a passenger. Another passenger helped the others to evacuate the bus.

The bus driver was taken to the Changi General Hospital for treatment and was given three days of medical leave.

As for Looi, who is a Singapore permanent resident, he was arrested on Jan 22, charged, and sent to the Institute of Mental Health for a psychiatric evaluation.

Not his first run-in with the law

The prosecution told the court in a statement that Looi had a lengthy criminal record and was previously jailed for eight months and one week on Feb. 23, 2024.

One of these incidents saw him colliding into a 76-year-old man as he was rushing to catch a bus on Sept 5, 2023, where the impact sent the elderly man flying towards a metal railing before collapsing.

He later succumbed to his head injuries and passed away.

Although Looi was found to suffer from autism and bipolar disorder, but a psychiatric assessment done in September 2023 said he was completely sane during the Sept 5 incident.
