In a heart-wrenching yet hopeful story that has touched thousands online, a Malaysian woman battling cancer shared how her boyfriend proposed to her the day before she began chemotherapy — despite knowing she could no longer bear children.
The woman revealed on social media that earlier this year, she was diagnosed with a fast-growing form of cancer. Following her diagnosis, doctors advised her to undergo surgery to remove her uterus in order to prevent further complications.
From surgery to Stage 3 diagnosis
Undergoing the surgery meant that while she had a chance of removing the cancer, it also came with a heartbreaking cost — she would no longer be able to have children.
She was upfront with her boyfriend about everything, and despite the news, he never left her side.
However, after the operation, doctors discovered signs that the cancer might have already spread.
She was told that it could be at Stage 3, and she would need to begin chemotherapy to prevent any potential spread in the future.
After making the difficult decision to undergo chemotherapy as a precaution despite knowing how tough the journey could be, she was caught off guard when, just a day before her first session, her boyfriend proposed to her.
Hesitant to accept him at first
While most might see a proposal as a purely joyful event, she admitted she was hesitant to accept it at first.
Being a cancer patient, she knew her future was filled with uncertainty. More than that, she was aware of how much her boyfriend loved children — something she would no longer be able to give him.
But his response was unwavering. He promised that they would get married once her treatment was completed.
“If he still chooses me, I’ll choose him too”
Despite her fears and insecurities, she said what moved her most was how determined he was in the face of all the adversity.
I hope he thought it through seriously. If he still ends up choosing me… then of course, I will choose him too.”
She was also touched that her boyfriend remembered what she once said about how she wanted to be proposed to.
“He remembered that I once said, if someone proposes to me, I want it to be with a gold ring. And if we want, we can upgrade it to a diamond one later,” she wrote.
Her boyfriend went on to secretly buy a gold ring, saving up over five months to afford it.
