A man in Johor was slapped with a hefty fine and ordered to hundreds of hours of community service after he admitted to forcing his niece into drinking ketum juice for online content.
As per a report by Harian Metro, the act was committed at a house in Rengit at 10.51pm on Nov 2 last year.

According to the charge sheet, the 24-year-old accused, who works as an electrical wiring worker, had allegedly forced his five-year-old niece into drinking ketum juice.

After making her drink the substance, he subsequently took a video of it before uploading it to social media.
Facts of the case revealed the accused was arrested by police on Nov 4 after a police report was lodged regarding the video which went viral online.

The accused, who was unrepresented, was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and punishable under Sections 31(1) and 31(2) of the same act.
He pleaded guilty before Judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh when the charges were read out to him at the Batu Pahat Sessions Court.

The court fined him RM10,000, which was paid by the accused.
The court also ordered the accused to be placed on a good behavior bond with a surety of RM2,000 for two years and to perform 120 hours of community service within six months from the date the order was issued.
For the uninitiated, ketum leaves contains the chemical substance mitragynine, which if taken in large doses, can lead to several health effects such as nausea, hallucinations, breathlessness, liver damage, and death.
