M’sian Man Loses Entire Retirement Fund After Lending To Relatives Who Never Repaid

Sometimes the deepest betrayal comes from the people closest to you.
A Malaysian man recently shared how his father lost his entire retirement savings after lending money to relatives who promised to return it but never did.

This anonymous story was posted on Facebook by XUAN and was triggered after the OP saw Jackson Wang in an interview saying he once lent 30% to 40% of his income to friends without expecting anything in return, simply because of “trust.”

For the OP, those words brought back painful memories from over ten years ago.

Trusted family with his life savings

Back then, the family ran a small business. Life was modest but stable until one day, a relative proposed a big expansion plan.

He spoke passionately, painting a bright future for everyone if they could just pull through this hurdle together.

Despite some doubts, the OP’s father, known in the family for his loyalty, decided to help.

He even withdrew his entire retirement savings from his provident fund without asking for any guarantees or written agreements. His only belief was simple: “My family would never harm me.”

But reality did not go as promised.

Nothing was ever returned

The money disappeared like it had been thrown into a bottomless pit. More than ten years have passed, and nothing was ever returned.

When the OP’s father cautiously brought it up, he was often met with cold or dismissive responses.

Meanwhile, relatives seemed to be living well while he had to live frugally, even hesitating to send his car for servicing because of costs.

What made it worse was that eventually, the OP’s father was told to step aside because the company wanted to “pass the baton to the younger generation.”

That day, he came home silently, carrying only a pair of old leather shoes and a faded family photo from his desk.

A painful lesson about trust and betrayal

The OP wrote that this experience taught him a hard truth: true kindness does not come from expecting returns. It comes from within. But when kindness meets selfishness, trust can turn into the deepest wound.

Even now, the family avoids talking about it. Yet, whenever they see certain people living comfortably, they are reminded of the father’s sacrifices and the promises that were never fulfilled.

“The worst betrayal often does not come from strangers. It comes from the ones you trust the most,” the OP added.
