A Malaysian gamer revealed that he has been hiding his real gender for more than ten years in various online games because his voice sounds young and feminine.
He shared his story anonymously on XUAN’s Facebook page, where it quickly gained attention for its unusual yet emotional twist.
The man, now 28, said he has been gaming since he was young and often used voice chat with teammates.
However, because his voice sounds soft, cute and childlike, other players would automatically assume he was female the moment he spoke.
At first, he tried explaining that he was a guy, but no one believed him. Some even demanded proof by asking for his Instagram, Facebook or photos.
Frustrated, he eventually decided to stop clarifying and let people believe what they wanted.
Never corrected anyone who called him “girl”
Over time, he got used to being mistaken for a female gamer. He said he never corrected anyone who called him “sis” or “girl” and he avoided meeting anyone from the gaming community in real life.
The most shocking encounter happened in a wuxia MMORPG, where he played a healer character that only had female avatars in the game.
He entered an in-game couple system just to earn rewards, but a male player on the other side ended up falling for him and wanted to meet.
When he finally confessed that he was actually a man, the other player replied, “It is okay. Even if you are a guy, I still like you.”
The gamer was stunned, but he rejected the meetup because he did not want his in-game life to cross into reality.
His gaming friends still think he is a girl after 10 years
The man shared that he has also played strategy tower games for more than a decade and has a group of long-time gaming friends who still believe he is a girl until today.
Sometimes, new players question his voice and accuse him of using a voice changer, but his old teammates will always defend him.
They have asked for his social media before, but he never agreed to share it. He said his teammates have always treated him kindly, looked out for him in matches and accepted him as part of the group, even though they have never seen his face.
He wonders if the friendship will change if they know the truth
In real life, he is not antisocial and has no issues socialising, but gaming is his way to unwind.
Still, he sometimes wonders if his friendships in the gaming world are built on a misunderstanding, or if the bond they built is already beyond gender.
He ended his anonymous post by asking netizens:
If you were me, would you continue staying silent or tell them the truth?”
