Every Chinese New Year, companies and households would hire lion dance troupes to perform as a way of ushering in prosperity and good luck for the new year.
After the performance, all equipment and human crew would then be loaded into the back of the lorry before heading over to the next destination, which is a common sight in Malaysia.
Fined for carrying lion dance troupe with lorry
A lion dance troupe crew member recently took to social media to air his grouses over what he felt was a case of being punished unfairly.
According to a photo posted on his Facebook account, it showed him holding a summons that was issued to him by traffic police in Johor.
Based on the summons, it stated that his offence was not following permit rules by transporting the lion dance troupe at the back of the lorry.
However, this didn’t sit well with the OP, who claimed it was his first time getting fined for using a lorry to transport a lion dance troupe.
He also sarcastically reminded others to be careful if they want to fetch people using a lorry lest they suffer the same fate.
Mixed reactions
In the comment section, not everyone sided with the OP in the matter, with some pointing out that the rules had been in place for a long time.
‘I thought it has been like this all this while? The back of the lorry is meant to transport items, not people. It’s just a matter of whether (the police) wants to catch you or not.’
‘It has been like this all the while, just that enforcement wasn’t strict back then.’
One suggested that the OP rent two separate vans for the equipment and crew respectively, adding that it was cheaper than renting a lorry and allowed the crew to rest.
