They say you can judge a society by the way it treats its most vulnerable.
If that’s the case, a recent discovery of a starving cat tied inside a rice sack speaks volumes about what still needs fixing in ours.
A viral TikTok video by @ashrfazmi0 has sparked outrage and heartbreak online after showing a shocking act of animal cruelty. It also highlighted the kindness of a man who refused to turn a blind eye.
‘I saw the sack moving’
The incident took place when the OP, Ashraf, was working nearby. What seemed like a normal day quickly took a horrifying turn when he noticed something unusual.
I’m really thankful Allah moved my heart to walk through that bushy area because usually no one goes there. When I got closer, I realised there was a cat inside, meowing like it was begging for help.”
What he found was a tightly tied rice sack, where a visibly weakened orange-and-white cat was desperately crying for help from inside the sack.
Saddened by cat’s condition
As Ashraf freed the cat from the sack, he was overwhelmed by its condition. The cat was skeletal, trembling, and gasping for air: clear signs it may have been trapped for days without food or water.
“How could someone be so heartless? Where is your compassion? It was gasping for air. I don’t even know how many days it had been in there. I cried seeing it.”
His immediate instinct was to help. After comforting the cat, he relocated it to a safer, more public area and quickly went to buy food, hoping to return with something to help it recover.
Unfortunately, the story took another unexpected turn.
“After five minutes, I moved the cat to a spot with more people around because I wanted to quickly go buy food. When I came back, the cat was nowhere to be found,” he shared.
Despite feeling devastated, Ashraf held on to hope that the cat had wandered off to safety. Still, the pain of not knowing what laid ahead for it lingered.
I’m really sorry. I hope the cat is safe. I pray I’ll find it again. To the cruel person who did this, may you never find peace in this world or the hereafter.
“Even if you dislike animals, don’t do something this inhumane. They’re still Allah’s creations.”
Never harm them because they too are creations of the Almighty
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Ashraf revealed that the incident took place on 4 July 2025 at 10.15 am at a rubbish disposal site located between villages in the Semenyih district, Selangor.
He also shared his message to the public:
“To the public and community, please love and have compassion for animals. Never harm them because they too are creations of the Almighty. Even if you don’t like them, don’t go as far as doing things like this.“
“To the person who dumped the cat, I only pray good things for you and that you will change for the better.”
After the video went viral, it quickly drew thousands of emotional responses from Malaysians, with many feeling heartbroken over the abuse the cat had endured, while others expressed admiration for Ashraf’s compassion.
