M’sian Man Disowns Daughter After She Falsely Told Police He Owed Loan Sharks Money

Nothing cuts sharper than betrayal.
Parents would usually do anything to save or rescue their children from trouble, but sometimes, there’s a line that needs to be drawn when things spiral out of control.

A man was left heartbroken and feeling deeply betrayed after his daughter reported him to the police over money owed to loan sharks when she was the debtor, not him.

During a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, the 63-year-old salesman named Lian (transliteration) said his 24-year-old married daughter had developed a gambling addiction, leading to her owing loan sharks money.

He added in January this year, he started receiving calls from loan sharks demanding payment. Left with little choice, he drained his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings, bank account, and borrowed money from relatives to gather RM250,000 and settle his daughter’s debts.

My daughter promised never to borrow from loan sharks again, but not long after that, I got several calls from two loan sharks last month, one of whom claimed she owed over RM40,000.

“When I confronted my daughter and son-in-law, they denied it and to my shock, my daughter even lodged a police report against me, where she falsely accused me of owing loan sharks money,” he said.

Knowing that his daughter was beyond help, Lian decided to cut off all ties with his daughter and urged the loan sharks to stop harassing him.

Meanwhile, Chong pointed out that, according to statistics, the complaints department received 16 cases involving a total of RM1.33 million related to loan sharks in January alone.

In December, the figure stood at 24 cases involving RM1.83 million in relation to loan shark debts.
