According to the charge sheet, Tan, who is also disabled, was accused of intentionally inflicting injury to his left eye in an attempt to claim insurance compensation amounting to RM1 million.

He allegedly committed the offense at Jalan Kampung Gajah, Kampung Paya, Butterworth, between 9am and 6pm on June 8, 2023.
Tan was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code, where he faces up to 10 years in prison, whipping and a fine, upon conviction.
He pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Siti Zulaikha Nordin@Ghani.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Airina Syazreena Zainurin proposed that bail be set at RM10,000 with one surety, while Tan’s lawyer Yaw Xinying pleaded for a minimal amount.

Magistrate Siti Zulaikha eventually set bail at RM6,000 with one surety upon hearing Yaw’s appeal.

The case was then postponed to Feb 20 for document review.
