M’sian Lecturer Reveals How Students Cheat With ChatGPT During Exams By Hiding Phones Between Thighs

Bold move for an exam.
Cheating during exams is nothing new, but a lecturer says students today are not even trying to hide it.

In a viral post, he claimed some were caught using ChatGPT in plain sight during an examination.

The lecturer took to social media to express his disappointment after allegedly spotting students using the same cheating method during an exam.

According to him, students were seen placing their phones between their thighs and opening ChatGPT while answering questions, a tactic he described as obvious and uninspired.

As a lecturer, I’m honestly disappointed when I see students cheating during exams. What’s worse is they all use the same method. Phone between the thighs, then open ChatGPT.”

He added sarcastically that if students were going to cheat, they could at least be more creative, joking that hiding notes in long sleeves would have been less obvious.

No fines issued but names get recorded

The lecturer explained that students caught cheating are still allowed to complete their exams, but their names and matriculation numbers are recorded and forwarded to the examination and registry departments for further action.

He added that his university does not impose on-the-spot fines. Instead, penalties include mark deductions or receiving zero marks for the paper.

“They let the student finish the exam, but the marks will either be deducted or become zero,” he said.

Cheating methods used to be more creative

The post quickly drew reactions from netizens, many of whom joked that cheating methods in the past required far more effort.

Some shared that before the Covid era, students hid notes in headscarves, left cheat sheets in toilets, wrote notes on their arms while wearing long sleeves, or even swapped answer scripts with high-scoring friends.

Others recalled older tricks such as hiding notes in pens, writing on erasers, water bottles, and shirt collars.

While many comments were light-hearted, several netizens agreed that cheating has always existed, but reliance on phones and AI tools has made it more obvious and easier to detect.
