SEGAMAT – In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old Chinese Malaysian law student, reportedly devastated by failing his exams for the third time, attempted a double suicide by self-immolating at a Petron gas station in Segamat and then sitting in the middle of a busy road.
According to the Segamat District Police, the young man first doused himself with gasoline and then set himself ablaze using a lighter.
In a horrifying scene, the law student quickly turned into a “fire man.” Fortunately, the gas station owner managed to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, preventing the situation from escalating further.
However, the desperate student was not ready to give up. He ran onto the road (185 km from Johor Bahru to Seremban Road) and sat in the middle of the road, hoping to end his life in a tragic traffic accident. A lorry driver managed to stop in time, but another car, a Proton Wira, lost control and hit the lorry, causing an accident.
Emergency services were quick to arrive on the scene, and the injured law student, whose body was 70% burned, was rushed to the Segamat Central Hospital for treatment. The police have initiated an investigation under Section 309 of the Penal Code, and if convicted, the student may face up to one year in prison, a fine, or both.
It is believed that the student was ashamed to face his family after failing the law exam for the third time, which led him to attempt suicide. However, the police are still investigating the actual cause of the incident.
The police are urging anyone who is experiencing mental stress to seek counseling or professional help and avoid taking irrational actions. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Segamat Police at 07-9324222.
