Growing up, we all had our fair share of being caned by our teachers at school whenever we did something wrong or failed to complete our homework on time.
A debate has broken out online after a mother took to social media to accuse a teacher of physically abusing her child after the latter’s hand became swollen after getting caned.
M’sian kid caned for forgetting to bring homework home
In a photo shared by the child’s mother on Facebook on Monday (May 19), it showed a red welt appearing on the upper part of the kid’s palm while her thumb had swollen up.
According to the mother, her child had made a mistake in one of her dictation questions and forgot to bring her exercise book home from school to do the corrections.
As such, she was punished by the teacher by getting caned on the hand.
The child’s mother also said when she confronted the teacher, the latter allegedly claimed that she had only caned her child “very lightly”.
“I’m wondering where is this really necessary? Does caning a child really produce ‘special’ results? Is this how an eight or nine year old should be treated in the name of education?” she asked.
Dividing opinions
In the comment section, netizens couldn’t quite come to a consensus on the matter, with some supporting the child’s mother and others not being on the same page.
Some condemned the teacher for being heavy-handed towards the child and said they had crossed the line when the child’s hand got injured.
On the other hand, some slammed the child’s mother for making a fuss over a small matter, with one saying that she was on her way into raising a spoilt child.
