M’sian Kedai Runcit Owner Says Customers Walk Out Upon Hearing RM100 MyKasih Isn’t Accepted

His biggest fear is closing down the shop he built with his wife because of MyKasih.
For most Malaysians, the government’s RM100 MyKasih aid is a welcome relief to help with daily groceries. But for some small business owners, it has become a different kind of challenge.

One of them is Adam Loong, 33, owner of Pasar Raya FM. He has been running his mini market since 2020, but says the initiative has caused his shop to lose customers.

“Our shop is not under MyKasih”

Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, Adam explained that his shop was not listed under the MyKasih programme.

Some of my regular customers think twice before buying from me. With MyKasih, they can shop at other places where the aid is accepted,” he told us.

Drop in business since earlier this year

When asked when he started noticing the decline, Adam said sales began falling earlier this year.

The situation worsened last month, likely due to the weakening ringgit and the rising cost of goods.

Customers leave after finding out

Adam also shared how customers reacted when they realised MyKasih wasn’t accepted at his store.

Customers often place their items on the counter before asking if MyKasih is accepted.

When told the shop is not under the programme, many walk away, saying “If that’s the case, I don’t want to buy,” leaving Adam and his staff feeling disheartened.

Applying for the programme

Adam said he applied to be part of the programme last month but has not received any feedback so far.

When asked whether he thinks MyKasih is useful, he admitted that it benefits the people.

My biggest fear

Adam and his wife are worried that if things continue this way, they may have to close down the shop.

Our biggest fear is shutting down completely. We just hope the community will continue to support us whenever they can.”

As the MyKasih programme helps millions, small shop owners like Adam hope they won’t be left behind.
