If you’re ever read the news, you’ve probably heard of instances of Malaysians being tricked into working for a scam syndicate under the guise of being offered a lucrative job and never heard of again.
For this Malaysian man, he managed to leave a scam syndicate in Cambodia all thanks to his inability to operate a device that’s very ubiquitous in this day and age.
M’sian job scam victim gets sent home for not knowing how to use a computer
Speaking to the media during a press conference upon returning to Malaysia on Thursday (Jan 9), the 38-year-old man named Xiao Fei (transliteration) said he had travelled to Cambodia on Nov 4, 2024, to apply for the job position of a private driver.

However, he realised he had become a scam victim when he was taken to the scam park, where he remained trapped for the next two months.
To his captors’ shock and bewilderment, Xiao Fei apparently didn’t know how to use a computer. Combined with his poor English skills and refusal to partake in the syndicate’s activities, he was thus deemed as “useless”.
Although he was still provided food and a place to stay during his time there, the stress of living in constant fear caused his weight to plummet from 90kg to 70kg.
Xiao Fei eventually managed to seek help from a friend named Xiao Gui (transliteration), who then contacted his mother.

He finally managed to see the end of the tunnel when his mother reported the case to police and reached out to the Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) for help.
Upon hearing that police were aware of the situation, the scam syndicate returned Xiao Fei’s passport and let him go to stop things from unravelling further.
“With MHO’s help, I was able to return to Malaysia safely. I am deeply grateful for their help,” said Xiao Fei.
2 others tricked into scam syndicate as well
Aside from Xiao Fei, MHO confirmed that two other Malaysians who found themselves tricked via the same job advertisement were also rescued.

Its spokesperson called upon the Cambodian government to take stern measures against scam syndicates in the country.
He also cautioned Malaysians to be on their guard whenever they come across job advertisements on the Internet.
