M’sian Influencer Says University Owes Him A Favour For ‘Buying’ A Degree From Them

'The university owes me, not the other way around', said the influencer.
With rising tuition fees and an ever-changing job market, many are beginning to wonder: is a degree still a worthwhile investment?

Influencer DMA Islam has ignited this debate with his recent comments on the YouCast podcast, where he argued that degrees are less about knowledge and more about business transactions.

During the interview, DMA Islam didn’t sugarcoat his opinions.

“What knowledge? We buy the degree, it’s costly, it’s money. If it’s just about gaining knowledge, there are other places for that,” he stated.

He argued that universities should be thanking students for “purchasing” their certificates rather than students being grateful for the education provided.

“People pursue degrees not for knowledge, but for employment, and we have to pay for the degree itself. So, the uni owes me, not the other way around.

They say they give me knowledge, no. I give you money, you give me a degree. That’s what people call a transaction.”

These remarks came as a response to a question from host Yousaf, who asked DMA Islam to explain his reasons for extending his semester.

‘This degree won’t help me’

The influencer revealed that he decided to quit his studies because the degree was irrelevant to his life goals.

“I actually don’t want to continue my degree, I want to quit. This degree has no relevance to my life goals. I don’t want to work for someone, and this degree won’t help me,” he explained.

DMA Islam also shared his opinion that not everyone genuinely wants to further their education just to gain knowledge.

He believes that individuals, especially those aiming to start their own business, do not need a degree.

“Most people pursue degrees because they want jobs, not because they genuinely want knowledge. Maybe one or two do.

I’m okay with people wanting to be nerds, become doctors, or lecturers, but if you want to be an entrepreneur, you don’t need a degree.”
