A woman who is pregnant with her second child experienced a painful moment at a government hospital when her husband divorced her through a voice note after learning she had been examined by a male doctor.
According to mStar, the woman had been admitted to the ward due to appendicitis during the early stages of her pregnancy.
At government hospitals, patients are examined by the doctor on duty while a female nurse is always present as a chaperone.
The worker explained that unlike private hospitals, patients at public hospitals cannot request the gender of their doctor because the country is facing a shortage of medical staff.
Husband divorces wife via voice note
After the male doctor completed the examination, the woman checked her phone and found a voice note from her husband.
In the message, he told her that he forbids any male doctor from touching or examining his wife. He added that if a male doctor did so, it would automatically result in divorce.
When she listened to the message, she cried. I thought it was because of the pain, but it turns out her husband had pronounced the divorce through the voice note,” the healthcare worker said.
The medical officer on duty could only advise the woman to refer the matter to the religious office once she was discharged.
“We cannot say much because we do not know the full details. We just told her to go to the religious office after she leaves the ward,” the worker added.
The healthcare worker also pointed out that if a husband does not want a male doctor to examine his wife, he should be prepared to pay for private care where a female doctor can be requested.
