A recent outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China has sparked global concern, with cases also confirmed in Malaysia.
A Malaysian man, known as “Sathesh Steve G,” took to Facebook to share his personal experience of battling the virus, urging others to stay vigilant against its symptoms.
Shares oxygen mask selfie to raise awareness
Sathesh shared three photos on his Facebook page, including a striking image of himself wearing an oxygen mask while receiving treatment in the hospital.

Alongside the photos, he cited a Sinar Harian report to highlight the symptoms of hMPV, which include coughing, fever, nasal congestion, and wheezing.
He also stressed the transmission methods of the virus, which spreads through droplets or aerosols generated by coughing or sneezing, close contact with infected individuals, or exposure to contaminated environments.
The virus has an incubation period of three to five days, according to the report.
This is my personal experience—I suffered for four days straight. If you experience these symptoms, don’t delay. Go to the nearest hospital immediately!” he wrote in his post.
Malaysia confirms cases but denies surge
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health has confirmed hMPV cases in the country.
However, Health Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa clarified that reports of a significant surge in cases are false.
While the situation is under control, health experts urge the public to remain cautious, seek medical attention for respiratory symptoms, and adopt preventive measures to minimize the spread of the virus.
