In the wake of the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) is urging employers to show compassion by offering paid leave and flexible work arrangements to employees impacted by the incident.

Many residents are now dealing with the aftermath — including trauma, hospitalisation, and loss of personal property.

Paid leave, not unpaid stress

KESUMA encouraged companies to grant paid compassionate leave so affected employees can focus on recovery and handling property loss without additional financial strain.

They also highlighted that flexible work arrangements (AKF) — such as remote work or adjusted schedules — are allowed under Section 60P of the Employment Act 1955 and can be requested by workers facing temporary hardship.

Employers are encouraged to take into account the difficulties employees are going through and approve leave or work arrangement requests for a suitable period,” the ministry said in a statement.

In the meantime, KESUMA has mobilised its agencies to work with other government departments to support those affected.

PERKESO’s Prihatin Squad has been deployed to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) and nine hospitals in Selangor to assist victims experiencing trauma or physical injuries.

For those who contribute to PERKESO, compensation is already being processed under social protection schemes such as the Invalidity Pension or Employment Injury Scheme — depending on the severity of their injuries.
