A rare number plate in the UK has caught everyone’s attention, and guess what? It belongs to Malaysia!

A plate so exclusive, it’s priceless

The video, shared by @numberplatehistory, shows a man explaining how the ‘1M’ plate is one of the most expensive in the UK and is completely off the market.

In the caption, he doubled down on its exclusivity:

“£1M Plate – You will never be able to buy!”

Unlike regular private plates, this one was specially issued to the Malaysian Embassy and is strictly non-transferable.

That means it can only be used on embassy-owned vehicles and can never be sold or registered for private ownership, as mentioned in the caption.

The hidden history of the ‘1M’ plate

This plate isn’t just rare – it’s been around for decades! Over the years, it has been spotted on everything from London taxis to high-end Mercedes-Benz S-Class models. Currently, it sits on a sleek S450.

While the exact date of issuance remains a mystery, documents indicate that the ‘1M’ plate was already in use as early as 1974, as recorded by the late number plate expert Noel Woodall.

Why is it worth so much?

According to the explanation given by the TikToker, the staggering value of this plate comes down to three key factors:

  • The Initial ‘M’ – A highly desirable letter, possibly representing Malaysia.
  • Minimal Characters – The fewer the characters, the rarer (and pricier) the plate!
  • The Rarity of ‘1M’ – The UK doesn’t allow two-digit plates, making this one of the shortest and most exclusive plates alongside the privately owned ‘M1’.

If this plate were ever to hit the market—which it won’t—it would likely sell for well over a million pounds. Now, that’s a plate with serious prestige!

@numberplatehistory £1M Plate You will never be able to buy! This number plate, with a dateless format, was especially issued to the Malaysian Embassy. As it an embassy plate, it is non transferable outside of their vehicles. Over the years, it has been on a variety of vehicles from London Taxis to Mercedes Benz S Classes, currently sitting on an S450. Although it is impossible to say when the registration was issued, documents tell us it was already in use by 1974 through the amazing researcher late Noel Woodall. If this registration ever came to market, not that it can, it would likely sell for over seven figures – or a million pound number plate! It’s value comes inherently from it’s initial, number, and character length. Number Plates / Registration value can be established by a few factors: 🔴 Popularity of Initials 🔴 Number of Characters 🔴 Quality of Numbers As it is impossible in the United Kingdom to have a two digit number plate, this is the shortest possible M alongside the privately owned M1.
