M’sian Govt Looking Into Festive Toll Exemptions For B40 & M40 Income Groups

Will focus more on groups that genuinely need it instead of providing blanket benefits to everyone.
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government is studying a more targeted approach to offering toll exemptions during festive periods.

According to Astro Awani, he stated that this initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate subsidies, focusing assistance on the B40 and M40 income groups instead of providing blanket benefits to all.

There have been questions about why toll exemptions are available to everyone, including luxury cars like Rolls-Royces, Mercedes, and Maseratis,” said Anwar.

“As such, we may need to explore alternative measures to better assist those at the lower end who are more affected.”

Study is currently underway

Anwar emphasized that the study is currently underway and noted that the principle of targeted assistance is consistent with the government’s approach to electricity and fuel subsidies.

He made these remarks during a press conference summarizing his work visit to the 2025 World Economic Forum.

Earlier, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated on Tuesday that 2024 would mark the final year of blanket toll exemptions for festive seasons. He revealed that the Cabinet had decided last year to identify more targeted measures, with further announcements expected soon.
