M’sian Flag Seen Displayed Beside SG Flag Outside HDB Unit, Carries Up To 6 Months In Prison

Uh oh.
Despite having a rather tumultuous history, it doesn’t change the fact that Malaysia and Singapore are still neighbours and share a lot in common in terms of culture.

However, there are still certain lines which cannot be crossed, such as hanging the flags of these two countries side by side, an offense which is punishable in Singapore.

In a 6-second video which was shared on Reddit on Sunday (Aug 11), it showed the Malaysian flag being hung beside several other Singaporean flags outside the ground floor of a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat.

Interestingly, the other units located two floors above displayed only the Singaporean flag, given the fact that it was the same weekend where Singapore celebrated its 59th year of independence.

The clip was later reshared on TikTok by thesgdaily, where it garnered tons of attention and curiosity from netizens, who wanted to know the HDB’s exact location. In response, thesgdaily claimed that it was located “somewhere in Yishun”.

Some also expressed doubts over the clip’s authenticity, but thesgdaily doubled down by saying that it “seemed real”.

‘This is illegal!’

On Reddit, the OP jokingly wrote in the caption that Malaysia and Singapore were celebrating their independence day together, based on the fact that Malaysia celebrates it on Aug 31 while Singapore does so on Aug 9.

However, the OP’s account has since been suspended on Reddit.

In the comment section, netizens were appalled by the person displaying the Malaysian and Singaporean flag together, saying that it was a huge act of disrespect.

One commented that the person behind the flag-displaying antic was openly asking for trouble, adding that Reddit was the driving force behind the authorities dismantling a man-made sauna back last month.

Another tried to inject some humour into the situation, saying that it was similar to companies celebrating the birthdays of workers born in the same month one shot.

Under Singapore’s Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, it’s an offense to publicly display any foreign flag or national emblem.

If caught, offenders will face a S$500 (approx. RM1,600) fine, a jail term of up to 6 months, or both.
