A recent technical anomaly in Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund (EPF) mobile application has left users unsettled after discovering unexpected increases in their account balances.
Instead of joy, many EPF contributors expressed deep concern over the security of their funds.
Extra RM320k
One retiree reported to See Hua Daily News that his EPF account balance had mysteriously increased by over RM320,000.
He initially assumed it was a temporary system glitch due to an upgrade and expected it to be resolved soon.
However, after two days, the additional amount was still visible in the mobile app, raising fears that such an error could just as easily result in a reduction of funds.
On January 19, the retiree took a screenshot of his inflated EPF balance as proof. By the morning of January 20, his account still showed an excess of RM320,000.
However, when he checked his latest official statement, the discrepancy was absent, and the balance appeared normal.
Visited branch for clarification
Concerned about the situation, he visited an EPF branch for clarification. Staff reassured him that as long as the official statement reflected the correct amount, there was no actual financial impact.
However, this response did little to ease his worries, especially after learning that his case was not an isolated incident.
A friend of his also noticed an unexplained RM150,000 increase in their EPF mobile app balance that morning.
However, when they checked again after 10 AM, the balance had reverted to normal.
