Some journeys to success start with long walks. For Jamaluddin Musa’s children, it begins with a boat ride through wind and tide.
It’s all driven by their father’s determination and belief that education is worth every wave.
While Tioman Island is known for its scenic beauty and turquoise waters, one father’s daily routine reveals the lesser-seen reality of island life. It’s a life marked by quiet grit and endless sacrifice.
A daily routine like no other

For the past seven years, 42-year-old Jamaluddin Musa has been ferrying his two children, Armin and Aida, across the sea every school day to ensure they attend Sekolah Kebangsaan Tekek in Rompin, Pahang.
“We’ve been taking this route every single day for seven years,” he said.
Most parents may face traffic jams on school runs. For Jamaluddin, it’s choppy waters.
When walking isn’t an option
The family lives on the other side of the island, far from the school. Walking there would take around four hours, involving dense jungle trails and uphill climbs, making it impossible for young children to do daily.
Instead, Jamaluddin turns to what he knows best: the sea. A 10-minute speedboat ride has become their everyday commute.
But it’s not always smooth sailing
As a scuba diving instructor, Jamaluddin is no stranger to navigating rough waters. Still, the sea can be unpredictable.
The weather can be challenging. Sometimes it rains, there are storms and strong waves. Sometimes we have to use a bigger boat for safety,” he explained.
One particular incident stands out in his memory. The boat’s engine fell off and sank, leaving them stranded mid-journey.
Luckily, I brought a paddle. I managed to row us back to the shore,” he recalled.
Sacrifices that speak volumes

Even with the dangers and setbacks, Jamaluddin has never once considered giving up. His motivation is simple: he believes that education opens doors, and he’s determined to hold that door open for his kids.
After the engine was lost at sea, he didn’t hesitate to invest RM6,000 from his own earnings to buy a new one, reported SirapLimau.
The engine fell off, so I had to buy a new one. I invested RM6,000 for the sake of my children’s education. Thank God, He blessed us with more sustenance after this sacrifice,” he said with gratitude.
Jamaluddin’s story struck a chord with many after he shared it on TikTok.
What stood out to netizens wasn’t just the scenic island backdrop. It was the extraordinary effort this father puts in, day in and day out, for his children.
The comments section quickly filled with support and admiration for Jamaluddin and his family:
“Proud to see island kids so committed to school even if they have to cross the sea. As a teacher, I feel sad when students who live nearby are too lazy to show up.”
“You’re lucky, little one. This journey to school by boat is such a priceless experience. Wishing you success in this life and the next.”
