An elderly couple were found dead after the two storey house they lived in was completely destroyed in a fire in Kampung Lausan, Batu 4, Kudat, on the night of Jan 23.
The male victim was 74 years old while his wife was 73. Both were discovered inside the bedroom of their home after firefighters managed to enter the building.
Reported by Harian Metro, Kudat Fire and Rescue Station chief Darikson Galanang said his team received an emergency call at 11.58pm. Ten firefighters were immediately deployed along with a fire engine to the location, which was about six kilometres away.
When the team arrived at 12.36am, they found the house fully engulfed in flames. Firefighting efforts were made difficult due to narrow access roads, a small bridge, and low hanging electrical wires that prevented the fire engine from reaching the house directly.
By 1am, firefighters discovered the couple inside the bedroom. The fire was brought under control at around 1.30am. The first victim was retrieved at 2am, while the second was retrieved at approximately 3.50am.
Both victims were later handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation.
The operation ended at 4.47am after the area was confirmed safe and no further hazards were found. Authorities said the cause of the fire and the total losses are still under investigation.
The firefighting operation was assisted by the Kampung Ayer Volunteer Fire Brigade as well as other agencies including the police and the Ministry of Health.
