Yesterday, thousands of Malaysian students received their SPM results, and along with it came heartwarming stories of those who overcame challenges during their academic journey.
One of them is Muhammad Faiq Sufyan Mohammed Yusof, who had to endure chronic pain and a long period of absenteeism caused by a spinal condition.
Missed school for three years
In an interview with Harian Metro, Muhammad Faiq said he suffered complications after scoliosis (curved spine) surgery, which led to a spinal cord injury.

As such, he was forced to undergo treatment at the hospital for eight months and this prevented him from attending school for nearly three years.
When I’m stressed, my legs hurt and cramp, and sometimes I can’t walk at all. I also had to sit for SPM at the hospital due to my condition.
“During the period that I wasn’t in school, I relied entirely on self-study through my phone and personal revision.

“I study whenever I have time, and if I get tired, I rest as the medication makes me sleepy rather quickly,” he said.
‘Illness not an excuse’
Despite these challenges, Muhammad Faiq said he was determined to repay his parents for their sacrifice and that their support was what kept him going.
He added that although he didn’t achieve stellar results in his SPM, he’s nonetheless grateful that he managed to pass the national exam.

“True success is not about grades, but about the effort to rise above challenges. Having an illness is not an excuse. Don’t be lazy and keep striving,” he said.
Congratulations to Muhammad Faiq for his accomplishment!
