It’s no secret that some businesses charge tourists higher prices to boost profits, often collaborating with tour guides to bring in customers.
While this practice may be common, it raises questions about fairness and ethics in pricing.
One durian seller, however, recently stood out by taking a firm stance against such tactics, winning hearts and support online.
Durian Heng, a local durian shop, became the centre of attention after a viral post revealed its commitment to treating all customers equally, regardless of whether they were locals or tourists.
This ethical stand soon sparked discussions across social media, with opinions divided between those supporting the shop’s transparency and others critiquing its strict pricing policy.
Refusing to play favourites
The controversy began with a tour guide’s complaint.
According to a screenshot shared by Malacca Durian Heng, the guide criticised the shop for refusing to provide a 20% commission after bringing tourists to dine there.
Frustrated, the guide labeled the shop as “stingy” and claimed they wouldn’t bring customers back.
Rather than backing down, Durian Heng responded with a bold statement.
The shop emphasised its policy of fair pricing for all customers, regardless of whether they were locals or visitors.
The owner clarified that the business couldn’t afford to offer commissions due to slim profit margins and humorously added that hiking prices arbitrarily would be a “grave sin.”
This response struck a chord with netizens, who quickly rallied around Durian Heng’s commitment to integrity.
Many praised the shop for refusing to exploit tourists or bow to demands for kickbacks. Others, however, directed criticism at the tour guide, arguing that such expectations were unfair, especially since visiting the shop was a personal choice.
