Whether it’s cutting lanes last minute or making illegal U-turns, dangerous road behaviour is something Malaysians unfortunately witness all too often.
While most of these moments pass without incident, some are only avoided thanks to pure luck or sharp reflexes.
This was exactly the case in a recent incident that went viral on TikTok, where a quick-thinking driver narrowly escaped a collision at a toll plaza in Rawang, Selangor.
The incident unfolds
The video was uploaded by TikTok user Qayyum (@_qayyumsz), who shared dashcam footage of the close call. It shows him driving through the SmartTAG lane on the far right of the Taman Rimba Templer Toll Plaza.
At the same time, a red Perodua Myvi emerged from the Touch ‘n Go lane, two lanes to the left. As the Myvi edged toward the right, Qayyum assumed it was simply trying to switch lanes and slowed down to give space.
But what happened next caught him completely off guard. Just as he began moving forward again, the Myvi abruptly turned right, attempting a U-turn in the middle of the toll exit.
Thanks to quick reflexes, Qayyum narrowly avoided a head-on crash.
A message delivered loud and clear
Unimpressed by the reckless move, Qayyum pulled over, stepped out of his vehicle, and gestured at the Myvi driver essentially asking, “Where’s your brain at?”
Apparently startled, the driver quickly changed their mind and drove straight instead of completing the U-turn.
The video has since gone viral, with many netizens criticising the Myvi driver for the dangerous manoeuvre and failure to use the signal.
Some, however, found the Myvi’s “retreat” kind of funny, joking that it looked like the car got shy after being scolded.
What really happened, according to Qayyum
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Qayyum revealed that the incident took place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at around 3PM, while he was driving along LATAR Highway heading toward Jalan Kuching.
“I never expected the Myvi to make a U-turn,” he said.
I thought the driver just wanted to enter the fast lane, so I slowed down and was going to let them go first. I was chilling on the highway, and suddenly the Myvi turned right from the third lane, right before the U-turn.”
He said he didn’t manage to talk to the driver.
“As soon as I got out of my car, the driver quickly drove off towards Rawang. I was honestly confused why they wanted to make a U-turn in the first place.”
Qayyum said things could’ve ended badly if the driver had gone through with it.
If the driver didn’t hear my blaring horn and continued to turn, a collision would’ve been unavoidable, no matter how much I tried to avoid it. Thank God they stopped, and I had just enough room to steer to the right.”
As for how he felt afterward, he said, “Honestly, I was relieved nothing bad happened because I just renewed my car insurance! I ended up laughing with my friends after and told them, ‘Weh, ada content,’ while pointing at the dashcam. I really didn’t expect the video to hit 1.6 million views.”
He also shared some advice for fellow road users:
“Driving schools exist to teach us how to be competent drivers. Once you pass your JPJ test, you’re responsible for your life and others on the road. Always use your signals and check your mirrors before making any move, it only takes one careless second to cause something serious.”
