M’sian Doctor Says Working In Sarawak Is Much Better Than Expected, Urges New MOs To Give It A Chance

A Malaysian doctor has captured public attention after sharing his positive experience serving as a medical officer (MO) in Sarawak, urging newly appointed doctors not to reject postings in the East Malaysian state.

According to him, working in Sarawak not only gave him peace of mind, but also unexpected perks and a refreshing perspective on healthcare service.

Relaxed and respectful atmosphere in Sarawak

In his social media post, the doctor, who is believed to be from Peninsular Malaysia, reflected on the more relaxed and respectful atmosphere he experienced in Sarawak’s healthcare system.

He said that hospital management there was easier to work with, and the patients were more polite and less entitled compared to those he had encountered in the Peninsula.

He recalled that despite the common perception that being stationed far from home would be difficult, his life in Sarawak turned out to be rewarding and fulfilling.

Frequently received gifts from patient

One of the most memorable aspects of his time there was the generosity of the patients.

He frequently received gifts of fresh produce from those he treated, to the point where his kitchen was always stocked with vegetables, fish, and durians — all free of charge.

In fact, he humorously pointed out that the only things his patients didn’t dare to give were chicken and beef.

Sarawak is highly sought after by local medical officers

Thanks to the lower cost of living and the community’s kindness, he managed to save nearly RM2,000 per month.

He said those who are worried about being posted to Sarawak should first study the state’s geography.

Many of the more desirable districts, especially those near Kuching, are highly sought after by local medical officers.

However, he noted that the health department often gives priority to newly appointed officers when filling these spots.

Many other hidden benefits

The doctor also noted that working in Sarawak came with other hidden benefits.

For example, staff there typically enjoy longer festive breaks without needing to fight over leave, and they are entitled to one free flight home per year.

Electricity costs were also significantly cheaper, allowing him to save even more money.

What disappointed him, however, was hearing how some people referred to being stationed in Sarawak as being “thrown” or “dumped” there, which he called disrespectful and unfair.
