A security guard in Melaka was ordered to pay a fine of RM1,500 after he pleaded guilty to to theft at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Jan 27).
46-year-old Mohamad Ghazali Maidin made the plea when the charge was read out before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman.
Stole RM131 worth of groceries
The charge sheet stated that Mohamad had stolen two packets of powdered milk, two bottles of shampoo and a bottle of laundry detergent, all of which totalled RM131.50, from a mall about 10.30am on Jan 21.

According to the case facts, CCTV footage showed him putting the items in a trolley before pushing it out through the first-floor exit without paying.
He then left the scene on a notorcycle, reported The Star and Sinar Harian.
Begged for mercy
Mohamad was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence against him.

Mohamad’s lawyer, Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek from the National Legal Aid Foundation, requested for a minimum sentence and said his client was a father of four who stole the items due to desperation caused by financial hardships.
Mohamad was eventually fined RM1,500, along with a one-month jail term in default of payment.
